MYSTERY PHOTOGRAPH HAD ME WONDERING

Family Photograph Identification

This photocopy of an old photograph came into my possession about June, 2000 after the death of Muriel (PEMBERTON) BRYANT, widow of Lynn Irving “Jack” BRYANT. On the back was written “Jack’s side of the family – this is way back” and included no identification of the individuals pictured. Jack is my uncle.

The photograph at first glance seems to be of a young couple, probably a marriage photo, from the last half of the 1800’s. The young woman seems to be a few years younger than the man. Since they were likely my direct ancestors, I wanted to know the identity of this couple if possible.

I enlisted the help of Mindy, my wife, who has studied historical fashion styles and costume design for years. The facts identified by her research of elements in this photograph are the subject of this article.
